Brand, an iconic Dutch brewery located in Wijlre in Gulpen-Wittem, has a rich history dating back to 1340. Although the oldest brewery claim is debatable, it is certain that Brand is one of the oldest breweries in the Netherlands. Beer brewing in Wijlre was already recorded in the early Middle Ages, supported by historical documents from the 15th century that describe the unique brewery rights.

The brewery has had its highs and lows over the centuries, including fires, takeovers, and innovations. In 1871, the L'Ortye family sold the brewery to Frederik Edmond Brand, whereby the Brand name was officially established. Under the Brands' leadership, the brewery grew into one of the largest in the Netherlands, with pioneering steps such as the introduction of bottom-fermented pilsner beer in 1902 and significant capacity expansions in the decades that followed.

In 1989, Brand was taken over by Heineken, which led to modernizations but also to the loss of some traditional features. Despite some controversy, Brand retains its reputation as one of the Netherlands' most beloved beer brands, albeit now produced at various locations outside Wijlre.
