What size garbage bag should I have?

The size of the garbage bag is expressed in liters or in height x width. But which one should you have? A standard garbage bag has a capacity of 60 liters and dimensions of 60x 80cm. This corresponds to the size of most waste bins at home. To determine which size waste bag you need, use the following rules of thumb:

• The waste bag is 30% larger than the dimensions of the waste bin/trash bin. This gives you a little leeway to fold the bag over the edge.

Rectangular or square waste bins

• You calculate the width of the bag by adding the width and depth of the waste bin. Please note: depth here is not from top to bottom (that is the height) but from front to back.

  • A (Mµ, My or T) value from 10 to 25 is suitable for, for example, organic waste, paper towels and everything except sharp objects that can tear the thin plastic. These bags can also be used in the (small) waste bins at the office.
  • A thickness of 50 or more (such as the KOMO bags and the plastic carrier bag from the supermarket) are somewhat sturdier and ideal for normal household waste. You should also use waste bags with a thickness of 50 for the larger waste bins in the office.
  • For bulky waste and larger waste bins and containers, use waste bags with a thickness of 70 or more. These are strong enough for larger (and heavier) contents and better resistant to sharp points.
