Aquarius is a well-known Japanese brand of sports drinks produced by The Coca-Cola Company, originally developed in 1978 and launched in 1983 in Japan with a grapefruit flavor. It entered the market against the dominant sports drink Pocari Sweat, which was mainly popular in Asia, Australia, the Middle East, Mexico and the United States, with Gatorade as a major competitor in the US. However, Aquarius quickly gained market share in regions where Pocari Sweat operated, and was later introduced in Europe, with launches in Spain and Portugal in 1991.

The name Aquarius was chosen because of its positive association with water (“aqua” in Latin) and also has a reference to the constellation Aquarius. This contrasts with the name Pocari Sweat, where some associate the word “sweat” with perspiration, although others see this as humorous.

Aquarius has a wide range that includes sports cap variants and was prominently used as an official drink at multiple Olympic Games including Barcelona 1992, Beijing 2008, Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2020. Although originally aimed at athletes for its hydrating and electrolytic properties, Aquarius now has attracted a broader consumer base with its “daily hydration” campaign, which promotes a healthy lifestyle to an active audience.
