A young painter from Da Vinci's students was inspired by the beauty of a young widow in the village of Saronno. His masterpiece, 'The Fresco of the Madonna,' can be admired in a church in Saronno. As a token of gratitude for his work, the widow created an amber-colored liqueur. The old recipe was rediscovered by the Reina family in 1525. Today the liqueur is still very popular, so popular in fact that this brand accounts for half of all amaretto sales!
